Do you have an old, plain ceiling light in your bedroom?

Here’s a few ideas on how you can improve it!

Do you have one of those old oyster ceiling lights that take globes? Or even the old fluorescent tubes? The first thing you can do to improve your bedroom lighting is to change your old oyster to a new LED oyster. Not only are they more energy efficient and brighter, but they are maintenance free! No climbing on a chair to change globes or tubes! There is a such a large variety of styles in the new oysters, but my favourite ones are the ones with the flat faces, they look so clean and neat. Most of them are Tri-Colour now too, so you have the freedom to choose between warm white, cool white or daylight.

The next thing you can do to improve your bedroom lighting is upgrade your lighting to downlights. There are so many downlights on the market, so it’s important to do your research and make sure you are buying high-quality fittings because otherwise you can run into issues like yellowing downlight faces, low light output and short light lifespans. Most average sized bedrooms will be perfectly fine with two downlights but if you want extra light or have a large bedroom, then four downlights would be the way to go. If you do go down the route of four downlights, I would recommend adding in a dimmer so that you can control how bright or dim you have the lighting.

We have a large range of high-quality downlights on our website that will suit your needs, but if you get stuck, just give us a call or pop in and we’ll be more than happy to help you and answer any questions!

Now you may be asking, ok but if I put in downlights, what do I do with the existing electrical point in the center? I have two suggestions:

  • Add in a decorative pendant or CTC (Close to Ceiling for those with low ceiling heights). This is a really great way to personalize your room and add a little pizzazz. You can create a beautiful, cozy atmosphere by adding in a decorative light and you can pull the whole room together by choosing the right one. Want to go down the modern route? Or perhaps a boho chic look? Maybe even a Hamptons type style? A pendant or CTC will achieve that!

  • The other option to utilize the existing electrical point, is by adding a fan. The only stipulation with adding a fan is that you have to install four downlights rather than two so that you don’t get the strobing effect while the fan is running, and the downlights are on. Now in adding a fan, you can add a fan without a light as you will have more than enough light with the downlights. However, some people like to add a fan with light so that they can choose whether they just want the fan light on, or if they just want the downlights on. Having a fan in your bedroom is not only great for air circulation (obviously) but for those with air conditioning, it’s a great way to cut your electricity costs because you don’t need to run your air con for as long (or at all even).
