Have a void but confused on what to put there or have no idea what size you need?

Here’s a few tips!

Don’t get me wrong, void pendants are mainly there for aesthetics over functionality, but you still need to choose the right one, so it doesn’t look out of place! Voids come in all shapes and sizes so there is no hard and fast rule for selecting the right pendant, but there are definitely some things to keep in mind.

First up, size. Generally speaking, if your void is wide, you either need something that is also wide, or you need to use multiple smaller pendants. You don’t want to completely overwhelm the space, but you also don’t want it to look bare. Find the smallest part of your void and work off that measurement and size to choose the right light. If you are going with multiple pendants, try and get a couple different sizes and hang them at different heights to really play up the space!

If you have a smaller or narrower void, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a showstopping piece. It just means you need to look for something smaller or in a different arrangement, like a cluster pendant! Clusters are great because they have multiple pendants coming from one base plate and are perfect for those with a smaller void. You can also get away with a single pendant, provided that the sizing is correct. Again, make sure you are going off the smallest or narrowest part of your void so that you don’t overwhelm the space. Don’t be afraid to elongate a cluster pendant if you have the room!

Now if you have windows in your void, I always like to have some, if not most of the pendant visible through the window because at night especially, it looks magnificent!

The other options you have if your void is over your stairs, are wall lights and step lights. Step lights are great as they highlight the stairs and it’s not overly bright and in your face at night. Wall lights will light up the general area and are a great option if you are wanting a bit more light than just step lights. Or you can combine both!

In terms of the style, I like to keep lights in the same family. So not necessarily repeating the same pendants but using pendants in the same colours/styles or families. So, if you are using smoke glass pendants through your house, then you should be doing something along the same lines for your void. If you are going for a Boho Chic look with pendants through your house, then again, something similar for your void. Doing this means that the design of your home flows well through all areas without repeating the same pendant and keeping it interesting.
